450/400 2⅜ “ Black Powder Express

This cartridge was introduced as a Black powder Cartridge in appox 1880. It was mostly used in single shot rifles, combination guns and double rifles In it’s beginnings it was not a very powerful cartridge . It was considered a medium size game rifle. the cartridge was very popular in Africa but not suitable for “ Dangerous Game. This cartridge made it well into The Nitro era as a “ Nitro For Black “cartridge. This cartridge evolved into the 450/400 3” Nitro Express and the More Popular the 450/400 3¼.

The .450/400 2⅜ inch Black Powder Express was loaded with a bullets from 210 to 270 grains (14 to 17 g) driven by 79 to 84 grains (5.1 to 5.4 g) of black powder. The .450/400 2⅜ inch Nitro for Black was loaded with a jacketed 270 grain round nose bullet driven by 38 grains (2.5 g) of cordite.

This cartridge was discontinued in 1935 by most British Ammunition manufacturers
